Making the Story of Your Lives the Story of Your Wedding

Jennifer and I photographed an incredible Wedding last July in Snohomish for one of our amazing 2017 couples, Brooke & Ben. I recently had a chance to talk with Brooke about her Wedding and how Jennifer and I were blown away by the level of planning she and Ben invested into all the details of their Wedding!

When I asked Brooke to describe the ‘style’ of her Wedding, her response was “we wanted our Wedding to be fun and quirky, and reflect on who we were as individuals and a couple”. They really pulled it off – somehow all these different aspects of their lives, before and after they met, came together perfectly to make a Wedding styled uniquely for them! Hopefully the examples that follow will inspire you to add elements to your own upcoming Wedding that will reflect personally on your lives as individuals and a couple.

So, let’s start where all Wedding Planning starts – with choosing a venue! Brooke and Ben love traveling and visiting places near lakes and oceans. Brooke also grew up taking regular summer vacations with her family out to Lake Chelan, so when it came time to choose a venue in Snohomish County, they really wanted to get one with a view of the water. When they found Green Gates at Flowing Lake in Snohomish, they immediately knew it was the right location! Brooke said, “It had everything we wanted, the water background, an open barn with great light and really good overall flow [of the venue space]”. Brooke also said the owners were “amazing – they were very helpful and got us anything we needed for set-up”.

OK – venue found, now on to the invitations! Brooke said she found a company who, in her words, “had tons of different options and we really liked the more classic floral design on the invitation, so we asked if they could change the coloring to match the navy and coral colors we knew we’d have in the Wedding. We also decided to continue to do a mix, sticking with classic and swirly text and then bring in the more whimsical handwritten text to show that it was going to be a more laid-back vibe overall, and not super formal, again, trying to stick more with who we are and making sure all of our decisions reflected that.” Brooke also had one of her close friends add an illustration of the couple’s canine companion (a large Samoyed named Albi) to their invitations along with a quote from the characters Dumbledore & Snape from the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Brooke is a HUGE HP fan) that reads “After all this time? Always”.

When it came time to choose a dress, Brooke decided to go through Laineemeg Bridal in Snohomish. Brooke said “I wanted something fitted and Cinderella too. I saw the perfect dress on Pinterest, and then found it at Laineemeg. We had the best experience there! They served us mimosas during our fitting appointment, they were very personable, and helped me find a veil and a belt that matched my sparkle style”. Brooke has always loved sparkles, so that theme was part of her accessories like her belt, shoes, hair clip, earrings and necklace.

As for the Wedding Party, Brooke and Ben went with dark navy-blue tuxes for the Groomsmen & complimentary coral color dresses for the Bridesmaids. And when it came time to order their bouquets and boutonnieres, they went with Flowers By Tiffany, who asked Brooke to bring in swatch samples from the dresses and tuxes so they could use them as a color reference to match with the flowers – how amazing is that! Brooke said they could not believe how incredible the floral arrangements turned out, which also included the aisle and alter arrangements that perfectly matched the color and style themes for her Wedding Day. Brooke said Tiffany also did a wonderful job with incorporating fabric from her Mother and Grandmother’s Wedding dresses into the bouquet wrap – adding that personal flare that ran through their entire Wedding Day!

Brooke said the company they hired for day-of Wedding Rentals, The Sweet Buffet Lady, also worked to meet her requests to personalize her reception. All the reception tables were covered with navy-blue tablecloths & coral napkins at the place settings (same as the Wedding Party colors) and had centerpieces made up of small rustic wooden boxes holding floral arrangements made from flowers purchased from a local outdoor market that were white, coral and pops of blue to match her dress and the Wedding Party colors too (told you they planned it out down to the last detail)! There were also some small, sparkle candles on each table as well (remember, Brooke loves her sparkles!).

When it came time to choose a Wedding Cake, one word leapt to both their minds – “Cheesecake”! So they went with a delicious cheese cake as a cutting cake, and then yummy mini cakes for their guests in a variety of flavors (such as traditional, key lime and marionberry – kiss the diet good-bye)! For a cake topper, they placed a Lego Wedding Couple Set (that Ben’s Mom brought back from Denmark – the birthplace of Lego) on top of the big Cheesecake. Ben, an Aerospace Engineer by day, was obsessed with Legos in his youth (not now – of course!), and so this cake topper has ties to his childhood. Ben’s occupation also played a pivotal role in the couple’s decision to go with socks for the Groom, Groomsmen, Dads and Officiant that all had an “outer space” theme – nice!

OK – so other items that personalized their Wedding; the rustic wooden Wedding Ceremony Arbor constructed by Ben’s close friend (who is also an Engineer) out of birch tree limbs (with Tiffany’s floral arrangements as accents, it was truly stunning), the Ring Bearer’s pillow made from the fabrics of the bride’s mother & grandmother’s Wedding Dresses, the hot dog snack cart because well – they both just love hot dogs, the delicious BBQ catered dinner from a restaurant they stopped off at for a beer in West Seattle one day and the personalized contributions from Brooke’s mom of an unbelievable name placard (set out on the guest book signing table) and a beautiful set of champagne toasting glasses.
